Aural test

This is something random that Nick Toh suggested I should do :P

http://tonometric.com/

Pitch test: 0.4875 Hz + 94th percentile

Rhythm test: 72.0% Correct + 44th percentile

Tone deaf test: 83.3% Correct + 79th Percentile

Oh man.. this has proven to me that I am such an unrhythmic person :S

Mr. Lim :)

Hi guys.. bet you guys dun even feel like reading my blog anymore due to the super low frequency of updates :( haha ... Well, firstly the connection wasn't really good and secondly, time doesn't allow me to! I've started working as a Teacher Assistant for the Aphelion Consortium of the Hwa Chong Institution (High School section) since 3rd Jan and it's 23rd Jan now :) WOO 20 days already!! will be getting my pay quite soon.. maybe in 10 day's time!

Now i managed to find time to do some reflection on my current job, which means i have to tell you what i have been doing for the past 20 days.. The tasks that I have performed: photo-taking of all students from Aphelion, collating and keying in of parent support group data, reventing and regular updating of the Aphelion Webpage (www.hci.edu.sg/aphelion) and APMOPS webpage (coming soon) and the most regular task of all.. relieve classes for teachers who are not available for the day.

I find the web-designing and updating tasks somewhat satisfying. It makes you feel good when the webpages, specially designed by you, are uploaded. Coupled with my tiny loyalty to Aphelion (I was from Aphelion last time), working on the webpages is in fact a pleasure! At the beginning, I was totally dumb-founded when my consortium director, Mrs. Ke asked me to revent the webpage :P Luckily Dewei was on my mind when that happened and I saught help from him during a Saturday. My IT skills were quite limited but now.. I am slightly more confident now :) THNX DEWEI!

the collating and keying in of the data from the Aphelion Parent support group was a big project that required lots of time and effort. Mr. Joseph Sim, assistant Aphelion director, who is the overall in charge for this PSG, saught help from Bumin, my senior who is in NUS now. Together we keyed in 4 x 3 + 3 = 15 classes' students' parents' data into an excel file.. (the file was 1.7 MB btw) haha.. the other hard part comes when we find out missing forms from students. we had to literally hunt them down to get their forms filled and signed.. some students.. yeah i understand that they are secondary school students., but they lack certain parts of their brains. They can actually submits forms that are unsigned. Their blurness could be too much a huge pain for teachers and admin staff to tolerate, which brings me to my experience in relieving the classes:

So far I have relieved all the sec 1,2 and sec 3 classes and only one sec 4 class. I was given the opportunity to spend more time with 3B and 3C non-Bio students. During their individual class Bio lessons, these non-Bio students are supposed to proceed to the Aphelion Room to either complete any available work or read any materials. I know in nature, sec 3s - 15 years of age is the golden age where they know what it takes to rebel, not to conform and sometimes a bit anti-establishment. They LOVE to make noise!! The more I treat them as adults, the more childish i get. That's the sad part :(

Being tame and 'guai' in nature, I was susceptible to their criticism or insults or what we commonly say 'niao'ings... They treat me more like their friend than a teacher. I was quite happy with that, until they got out of control :S How? speaking vulgarities in front of me, copying homework like no buddy's business and chatting on a phone during class!! I believed i have shouted at them more frequently than i do so in HuaGang. and i dun like to shout... but i have to.. which is sad..

there was once I was so pissed with the class that i just sat down and stared at them regardless of the time. and this method worked on them.. they noticed that i am pissed and i need their attention. Complete silence returned the class shortly.

I think I was too nice a teacher for this month and I began to think that if i let this super-very-mr-nice-guy-teacher spirit in me prevail, I could eventually spoil them and I certainly do not want that to happen. As much as I want to relate with them, I want them to know that teachers are people who have devoted their lives to mould people so that they will be in good condition to face the challenges of tomorrow's world. It is NEVER easy being a teacher.

I do hope that my students will learn to grow up. It's not that they are bad, in fact, there are some students whose virtuous action caught my attention. Simple things like telling friend who was on MC about what the teachers have said while he was away, helping the teacher quieten down the class, and a simple but sincere 'thank you' from them (individually) will make the teacher's day. The fact that they shush after my very serious talk to them shows that they are matured to a certain level and I am hoping to see them reaching much higher levels. I'm very glad to see them and I thank God for them as they help me learn how to deal with them :) This job has been a blessing to me and I hope I can be a blessing to the students and the teachers!

shall end here.. think it's a bit long haha :) All the best!!!
